There are some links included here that can even help you find local places to buy food (for example, produce) that you may not have known about. I was thrilled to find this section. For example, the Wine Lover’s Page where you can get straight talk about wine. And there’s no snobbery allowed!
Tools of the Trade – Here you can find places to get the kitchen tools you need, as well as, great product reviews.
Healthwise – Do you have a special diet, do you want to control your weight or do you just want to get the skinny on organic foods? Well, if you want to do any of those things, this is the section to browse.
Food Reads – This section is my favorite part of the site and the entire reason I wanted to bring the site to you. Here you will find the most amazing resources, from recipes to food blogs to magazines and cookbooks. There are so many interesting food recipe sites that I jumped for joy and got ready to dash to the kitchen to start trying things out. I loved Crash Test Kitchen.

This is a fun site that combines math and math trivia questions with cute photos of cats! Navigation is super simple. Just click any one of the pictures to explore. The sections are: Math Cats Explore, Math Cats Love MicroWorlds, Math Crafts, Math Cats’ Art Gallery, Math Cats’ Attic, Math Cats’ Love Mail and my favorite, Math Cats’ Photo of the Week.
Math Cats Explore – This is the place to really get the lead out and explore. You will find tons of math related problems, trivia and other activities here. For example, the ancient Egyptian Math Cats Fractions, where you can learn all about fractions with Math Cats. You’ll also find links to story problems, games and fun applications. For instance, the “Exactly How Old Are You”? application. This one breaks down exactly how old you are from the information you put in. It even tells you when your next birthday celebration is! My favorite here was the New Math Loving Animals in the News section. You can learn all about the beavers who built a dam out of money there!
Math Cats Love MicroWorlds – For this section, you need to download the MicroWorlds Player, but trust me, it's well worth it and it's free. (There are instructions at the top of the page on the yellow band of color on how to do so and where you can get it). This section is full of interactive applications that will help you learn and make math fun!
Math Crafts – Here you will find a bunch of craft projects that are math related, but fun for your kids to make. This is a great way to start teaching geometry to little kids, because it makes it fun.
Math Cats’ Art Gallery – Here you can find artwork that was designed for a logo challenge. You can also find some fun drawings made by children that were sent into the site. A fun, frisky section.
Math Cats’ Attic – This is an archive of past questions and answers from the magic chalkboard. What’s the magic chalkboard? Well, you are right to ask. You may have noticed the black boxes of scrambled text all over the site. Well, if you mouse over them, they reveal not only the correct answer to the question, but usually the method to get there.
Math Cats’ Love Mail – Here you can send in feedback and read the feedback that others have left on the site before you. The site author even posts as to why there are more open ended math explorations than games, which I thought rocked. See, once you got the right answer in a game, you could just memorize it, but that doesn’t encourage you to think! Makes sense to me!
Math Cats’ Photo of the Week – I love this section! You’ll find the link to get here by looking just under the yellow bar before you get to the mouse hole shaped pictures of the other sections. Here you get great cat facts mixed with trivia and math questions. You can even check out the past photos of the week!
This is a great site to use to help get kids interested in math. Go ahead and make it fun at the same time!

National Geographic’s My Wonderful World program:

***************
This site reminds me of those magnetic letters that parents buy for their children and put on the refrigerator so the kids can spend countless hours arranging and rearranging the letters into words. It would make a great way for kids to practice spelling, that's for sure. But, even as an adult, I really enjoyed this site.
Start your trip by selecting the language of your choice. I chose English. In a new window, the Wanna Spell spelling board will load for you. Now, you can choose from the letters on the board and start spelling. The other neat thing is that more than one person can be on the spelling board at the same time. The boards are set up like chat rooms in that respect. You can change rooms by going to the drop down box above the white board area and just select a different room.
To start spelling, click and drag the letter you want to the area of the board where you want to start spelling your words. How easy is that?! And, just below the white spelling board, you can see how many people are dragging (how many people are in the room with you) at the same time!
Pretty neat, huh?
Happy spelling!

Online Encyclopedias
by Barbara J. Feldman
http://www.surfnetkids.com/encyclopedia.htm
Online Encyclopedias Printable (** for premium members only)
http://www.surfnetkids.com/printables/encyclopedia.pdf
Although the Internet could be viewed as one giant encyclopedia, there is one
very important difference: the bulk of the Internet is written by sources with
dubious credentials. When you need background information for a school paper or
a research project, you not only need it quickly, you need to trust your
sources. Here are my recommendations for trustworthy (and free) online
encyclopedias.
Encarta Encyclopedia
http://encarta.msn.com/artcenter_/browse.html
![]()
Encarta offers 4,500 articles from their CD-ROM encyclopedia, hundreds of
related multimedia clips, a talking dictionary, and a world atlas. Although many
of the encyclopedia articles are behind the subscription wall, you can get a
renewable two-hour pass for free. Simply enter Encarta via MSN Search (
http://search.msn.com ) by clicking on the Encarta tab, or visiting any
Encarta link from your search results page. You will need to have cookies
enabled to use the free pass. When it expires, you can return to MSN Search to
get another.
Encyclopedia Smithsonian
http://www.si.edu/resource/faq/
![]()
Although not strictly a general purpose encyclopedia, the Encyclopedia
Smithsonian "features answers to frequently asked questions about the
Smithsonian and links to Smithsonian resources on subjects from Art to Zoology."
Since there is no search function, the only way to navigate is through the
rather eclectic A to Z topic listing. Using your browser Find function to search
for specific words (Control-F in Internet Explorer, Firefox and Netscape) might
be useful on this long index page. Although the interface is chunky, the content
is first rate, so don't let it stop you from exploring what the Smithsonian has
to offer.
HighBeam: Encyclopedia.com
http://www.encyclopedia.com/
![]()
High Beam's Encyclopedia.com is composed of 57,000 articles from the sixth
edition of Columbia Encyclopedia. Each entry is short but includes hyperlinked
references to other encyclopedia articles, as well as links to periodicals and
images in the fee-based HighBeam Research Engine. The Web button is a
meta-search function that allows you to choose five (of twenty-six) engines to
search simultaneously.

Remember Mad Libs? The word game where you choose random nouns, verbs, adjectives and other parts of speech, and then read them back as part of a funny story? I used to while away the hours on family road trips filling in Mad Libs, and then reading them back to my amused parents.
Well. I now have a first grader who's big into reading and writing, and my love for Mad Libs has reemerged. They are ideal fun learning...not only do they remind us all about the parts of speech (remember what an adverb is?), they involve the whole family in the entertainment. My kid loves filling in all the blanks. There areMad Libs for the big kids, andMad Libs Junior for young 'uns.

Mathematics of paper dolls
http://educ.queensu.ca/~fmc/june2002/PaperDoll.htm
I love when math makes an activity more satisfying. For example:
With your child, make the paper doll chains as shown on the web site.
Then enjoy - because math is what makes these chains so cool:
Patterns: Figures alternate - for example, right arm up, left arm up, right arm up, left arm up.
Reflections: Kids love that every other doll is a flipped copy of the one next to it. Technically, that's called a reflection, one of three kinds of geometry transformations kids study in elementary school - the other two being rotation (spinning a figure around a point) and translation (moving it to the side).
Powers of two: Fold the paper twice - you get four figures. Fold the paper three times - you get eight figures. Fold four times - you get 16 figures. Every fold doubles the number of figures again.
Multiplying fractions: Every time you fold, the dolls become half as wide. That's a visual illustration of what it means to multiply by a fraction, in this case (width) x 1/2. Or, if the first fold divides the paper in half, and the second fold divides it in quarters, that's like saying 1/2 x 1/2 = 1/4. The next fold could be expressed 1/4 x 1/2 = 1/8, and sure enough the next fold divides the paper into eighths.

Welcome to Nova Online’s Pyramid. I’ve decided to bring you to the site from the table of contents, simply because it makes it easier to explore everything.
The table is broken down by pyramid and sphinx, as well as, excavation and the usual credit links.
The pyramids are Khufu, Khafre, Menkaure and you get the bonus of the Sphinx.
Khufu – Here you can view what it’s like to stand at the top of this pyramid and look out over the surrounding area with View from the Top. Thanks to QuickTime, you get a 360 degree view of the area. You’ll find the directions for looking around the image just above it. Want more detail and you have a cable or DSL connection? Scroll down to the bottom of the page and see the same view in high resolution. Don’t have QuickTime to see the VR photo? Well, just click the link About QuickTime VR and you’ll be whisked away to where you can learn about it and get it for free!
The Cross-Section link takes you to a diagram of the pyramid’s layout. From here, you can click the link to the Inside Story. The Inside Story not only gives you the history of the pyramid, but also allows you to step inside. You have several options of how you can travel inside. You can choose the High Resolution or Low Resolution Routes that use QuickTime VR or you can choose the Photographic Route which uses still images. Or you can choose to download the Whole Experience (2.7 MB) and browse through the whole pyramid without having to wait for the rooms to load and such.
I took the high resolution tour and boy was it breathtaking! It’s like you are actually walking and exploring inside the Khufu pyramid. In the pyramids section on the table of contents, you will also find links to learn about the history of Giza, learn about hieroglyphs and much, much more.
The Excavation section is a lot of information for you to read and learn about Giza, the pyramids and the Sphinx. Some of it is done in an interview style, some is just information presented to you. It’s a very interesting section. Especially reading over the newsflashes, I don’t know quite how to describe them to you. They are like newsflashes on TV, short blurbs that cover discoveries and regular things like the dig season coming to an end.
So, are you ready to go visit the Sphinx or look down over the land from the top of Khufu? Enjoy!

Steve Irwin Printable (** for premium members only)

On September 4, 2006 Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin (1962 – 2006), an Australian
naturalist and television personality, died unexpectedly in a freak sting ray
accident. Irwin and his wife Terri Irwin owned and operated the Australia Zoo in
Queensland, which Irwin inherited from his parents. But he is best known for his
fearless antics on his Discovery Channel television program "The Crocodile
Hunter." Because of Irwin's celebrity status, some of today's picks are
struggling with overwhelming traffic. If you can't reach one, just skip to the
next, and try again later.
Animal Planet: Crocodile Hunter

Irwin's "Crocodile Hunter" television show propelled him into worldwide
superstar status. Visit the official Discovery Channel site for Close Call video
clips, a Crocodile Hunter trivia quiz, an Irwin family album, and a fan bulletin

menu (on the Croc Fan Central page.) My favorite is meeting the animals of the

"I believe that education is all about being excited about something. Seeing
passion and enthusiasm helps push an educational message." Irwin was an
exuberant environmentalist. The quotes collected here cover his love of
wildlife, the environment, Australia, and his attitudes about fear. There is
also a short biography and links to quotes by other Australian scientists. "Crikey
means gee whiz, wow!"

This is quite a good idea. Go to this web app calledDaily Lit, select a free book, choose a frequency, and you will receive an email with small snippet of the book based on the frequency.
It is neat because the web tool adds book reading into your workflow.
What’s the downside on this tool? It has a limited ranges of book to select.
1. Why read books by email?
Because if you are like us, you spend hours each day reading email but don’t find the time to read books. DailyLit brings books right into your inbox in convenient small messages that take less than 5 minutes to read. This works incredibly well not just on your computer but also on a Treo, Blackberry, Sidekick or whatever the PDA of your choice. In the words of Dr. Seuss: Try it, you might like it!
2. How long does it take to read a book?
That depends on three factors. First, on how many parts are in the book (shown when you browse for books). Second, on how frequently you choose to receive emails. Third, on how often you read more than one part (by using the “send me the next part immediately” feature). So here is a typical example. I am currently reading Dracula, which has 187 parts and I am receiving parts on weekdays, i.e. 5 days/week. So at most it will take me 187/5 = 37 weeks. But when I am on the train or waiting, I often read more than one part, so I usually wind up reading about 10 parts/week. This means I will finish Dracula in about 19 weeks or 5 months. If that seems long to you, try something shorter!

The Internet is contagious with word-of-mouth and email-forwarded motion picture clips accessible via computers. The more these viral videos, as they have come to be known, are discussed among friends and associates, the wider the viewing popularity spreads. The selections listed are only 10 slivers off the tip of the funny iceberg, but here at About Humor, they are among the favorites of our readers -- classics to watch over and over again.
While the funny viral video classics on this page are not ranked in any particular order, this one is, perhaps, the most inquired about multimedia piece I've dealt with during my years writing on humor. Although very popular, the clip's feed sources tend to vanish, creating a secondary career for me in the tracking of its whereabouts. In hot pursuit of the Dancing Dog, I've watched him perform dozens of times with his partner. Those six amazing feet never fail to make me smile.
You'd expect a lot of interest in the high profile advertisements sharing screen time with the annual football championship game, but, hey, the collective batches of 30 and 60-second comedy promos bring back bowls of fans to chuckle at them throughout the calendar year.
Unlikely hip-hoppers Chris Parnell and Andy Samberg struck a chord in a 2005 Saturday Night Live spoof music video.
You know, only the other day, Paris Hilton and I were discussing that we should never, ever videotape anything we'd unwillingly allow others to see. The Kid's private moment of play became a worldwide phenomenon when his footage was posted on the Net.
Star Wars comedy virals are everywhere, but nothing can beat this one, a clip of the hysterical confrontation of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog and Star Wars nerds waiting in a theatre line to see Attack of the Clones. The excellent improv by puppeteer Robert Smigel, as shown on Late Night With Conan O'Brien, can be caught online at Starterupsteve.com. Alternate sources: Google Video | YouTube.
A 19-year-old, Gary Brolsma, performed a frenzied lip-synched musical goof while he flashdanced along in his computer chair. He uploaded the video, soon finding himself a viral video sensation.
A young man with no apparent musical ability is seen warbling a numbing rendition of "She Bang" at his try-out before judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson. Ironically, the instant success of this gutsy video made him more popular than most of the strong contestants on the program.
The notorious "wardrobe reveal" from Super Bowl XXXVIII is proudly displayed by IFILM. Justin Timberlake exposes Ms. Jackson's breast to shock the world! Oooooo. Was it too much? The Feds thought so, busting the bust with a reported $550,000 fine.
While technically not a video, the HampsterDance was passed around and observed like crazy in the days before streaming broadband capabilities were widely available. The diversion is simple: a collection of assorted animated .GIF hamsters gyrating forever to a looped snippet of Roger Miller music from Walt Disney's Robin Hood. The look of the original page has been updated and the music shortened, but you'll get the idea. Also, read about and play with the interactive HampsterDance2 toy.
Still creepy after all these years, the surreal 3-D animation was quite a sensation across that old-timey Internet of the 20th century. Burning Pixel Productions is proud of their baby, a diapered, viral video pioneer long before going Hollywood with Ally McBeal.

Fun with Mirrors
http://littleshop.physics.colostate.edu/onlineexperiments/Flatware.html
Does your child like to look at his face upside-down in the bowl of a spoon? This page has several ways your child can play with flatware and learn about the properties of mirrors. For example, it suggests bringing the spoon closer and closer until the image is no longer upside down, but magnified.
If your child is curious about how mirrors reflect light, here's a fun activity called "Spot Yer Mate" that helps explain it, using yarn to represent light rays.

Do you want to go on a treasure hunt? Well, Geocaching is a great modern way of hunting treasure and has become very popular since the arrival of GPS units. And now that GPS units are easier to get your hands on, even more people can play. Geocaching is a treasure hunt for people who own a GPS unit. You can both hide and seek!
If you want to get the most out of this site and are going to get out your GPS unit and play, I’d recommend registering. Don't worry, it’s free! This allows you to be notified when there is a new cache in your area and you will also be able to find folks near you who are Geocaching. That way, you can share your experiences with the online community here.
There is a great search engine in the top corner where you can search for caches by zip code, state and country. Or you can get really specific and use the Advanced Search link below the search fields.
On the side menu, you will find Getting Started, Hide & Seek a Cache, Find a Benchmark, Track Travel Bugs, My Account, Forums and Resources.
Getting Started – If you have questions, this is a great place to start. You can learn all about Geocaching, how it works, how to play and much, much more.
Hide & Seek a Cache – This section not only lets you find caches to look for in your area, but gives you great tips on hiding a cache.
Find a Bench Mark – Another game you can play with your GPS is benchmark hunting. What’s a benchmark? Well, this is what the site defined it as: “Geodetic control points are permanently affixed objects at various locations all over the United States to enable land surveying, civil engineering and mapping to be done efficiently.” The great thing is that while having a GPS unit makes finding them more fun, anyone can find them. Once you are in the right area, you have to use the description in the database to find the benchmark.
Track Travel Bugs – This is another game that people play by Geocaching. You will learn all about it in this section. I thought this one was pretty neat. If you find a travel bug in your cache, you can go to the Web site and report that you found it and you can tell your story on how you found it. Then you can go out and hide it for the next person to find. There are even goals that you can set for yourself. For example, wanting to be found in every state in the United States or making its way from the east coast to the west coast.
My Account – Once you’ve registered, this is where you can manage your account settings and such.
Forums – Here you can get together with other Geocachers and share your experiences, ask questions, etc.
Resources – This is a section of useful links that all relate to Geocaching. Think of it as a reference section at your local library.
I think this is a fascinating game and a great way to use new technology!

Any do-it-yourself project is a Big Learning project, and costume making is no exception. Use these pages as idea starters.
Since it's rare to have everything called for on a web site, encourage your kids to use their creativity to figure out substitute materials.
Also, stretch the Big Learning by encouraging your kids to add their own ideas to what they find on the Internet. That makes the costume-creating experience more satisfying for kids, and forces them do more thinking and planning to implement their ideas.

August 10, 2006 (2 p.m. EDT, 11 a.m. PDT)
You may manage a big network, but that doesn't mean that only big enterprise applications
can cause headaches. The line between business and consumer products has faded, which
means network professionals have to keep a watchful eye on a new breed of software. How
do you monitor and control your network infrastructure in a world filled with public IM,
VoIP, peer-to-peer applications and more? Matt Anderson, an analyst with The Radicati
Group, discusses the problem and looks at ways to keep your end-users happy and your
business operating safely and efficiently.

** Webcast: Non-Intrusive EAI to Improve Information Flow
http://nl.internet.com/ct.html?rtr=on&s=1,2kmw,1,6qnn,9iuj,1gjv,kbe9
To improve their information supply chain, many organizations have embarked on
traditional enterprise application integration (EAI) projects that promise the seamless
integration of systems within the enterprise. EAI projects are notoriously difficult to
deliver on time and within the budget, however. They require the work and experience of
vendors, which cost money, and employees, some of whom may no longer be available. Join
software and IT management expert George Spafford to discuss the challenges of
traditional EAI projects and how enterprises can streamline their information supply
chain without taking on such a costly and time-consuming process.
