Azilda Lionheart Newsletters

Back in 2002, we started publishing a newsletter on a monthly basis. We had a little contest to see what we would call it. Then Lion Jacques Lacroix, was the winner with the name Azilda Lionheart. Due to the fact that some Lions still do not have computers, we decided it might be a good idea to restart the printed version of our newsletters.
Here you will find all the old ones that have been saved and starting with the new year, we will be posting one on a monthly basis.
If you would like a copy of the printed version, you will be able to print it right from here (if you have access to a computer, of course) or contact one of our members or myself and we will gladly mail you a printed version of it. Also, if you visit the different doctor's offices in Azilda, copies will be brought there for your convenience.
As always, comments and suggestions are always welcomed. Feel free to call me at 983-2097 or email me at www.boubou358@hotmail.com You can always bring articles you find to the meetings and hand them to me there. I thank you in advance and hope you will enjoy this new correspondence.

Word from our President:
We have just come back from the Convention in North Bay last weekend. Though attendance was down, a great time was had by all. It is disappointing however to see so many Chair left vacant. I’d like to congratulate Lion Al of Onaping Falls for filling Zone Chair for this upcoming year. Also, congratulations to Lion Brian Closs replacing me as Region Chair. I wish you both the best! Thank you to all who have supported me through my term as ZC and RC. I enjoyed it and will miss being on Cabinet.
Already plans have started for next year’s convention which will take place in Sudbury, hosted by the clubs in Region 14. Best of luck to all of them!
I’d like to invite everyone to our spaghetti supper May 20th. This will be our last one for this Lions year. Attendance has really picked up with each one. I know we will have a big donation for the Rick McDonald park because of your support.
Soon the 2009-2010 year will be over but work still remains to be done. We are now working on our Golf Tournament. If you are interested in putting in a team, contact our secretary who will gladly forward you a form. You can pre-register through the Caisse in Azilda and Chelmsford. The cost is $65/person which includes your supper and a gift. If you wish a cart, an extra $30 will be applied to reserve it for you. Hopefully we wont get rained out this year!
I am now planning my President Night. I am hoping to see all members attend this last evening of gathering before summer break.
To all the moms and grand-mothers out there, have a great Mother’s Day.

Word from our Governor:
It’s a new year and all our Clubs have made it through the hectic Christmas holidays. For some reason most of our heavy lifting is finished
for the year after the holidays are over which leaves extra time and energy for us to concentrate on raising funds to help support our District
project and membership.
Our Project is going very well and we are about half way there. I know with a little effort we can meet our goal. This is a very important
endeavor especially for those Clubs assisting people who do not live in the Sudbury area.
Members are the lifeblood of our Organization and I cannot stress enough how important it is to gain new members to help with our everincreasing
load. So far this year we have dropped 88 members and have lost 13 who have sadly passed away and have only inducted 58
new members, which leave us with 43 less than we started the year with. I know the Clubs are trying their very best and I appreciate your
efforts, so please keep up the good work.
Please don’t forget that very special day this month, “Valentines Day”. I know you all work very hard and are away from home allot during
the year with Bingos and other Lions Projects so spend some time with your loved one on that special day to say thank you for being there
for us. While you’re at it, you might want to consider bringing that spouse or partner to our District A-5 Convention where they can socialize
and meet some pretty nice people, enjoy some good meals and have some fun.
I’d like to thank Lion Vern Presse and 1st VDG Lion Bill Walker for going to Moose Factory Island and giving the members there
some much needed training and assistance. Seems that Club is well on their way to becoming a vital and strong club once again. It is going
to be great to have them back in the family. Thanks to PDG Ivor Jones for all his efforts in getting them going again.
There is no question in my mind that we are “Moving Forward” and the result will be growth and a stronger District.
YIL
Lion Maurice Turgeon District Governor A-5
Word from our President:
With the elections held last month, I am pleased to be voted as your President for one more year. I would also like to thank Lion Madeleine for remaining as secretary and Lion Phyllis for taking on the treasurer position.
With the Jug Curling invitations out, the work has started to get everything in place for the event. If you know anyone who has gotten an invitation, please encourage them to send their answer in asap so we can replace them, if need be. We will be needing volunteers to coordinate the event that weekend. If you know any interested volunteers, please bring them to a meeting.
As you know, we are still looking for new members, good, working members. Don’t hesitate to invite friends and neighbors to a meeting so they may see what we do. It is often the best way to recruit. With our dues being only $30/year, this cold entice more prospects in joining our team.
This spring, trees will be planted at the Memorial Forest in memory of past Azilda Lions Marcel Brouillette, Larry Nault, Andre Villeneuve and Diane Terava. Check your newsletter and website for more details on the date and the Golf Tournament linked to that ceremony.
Keep up the good work!
President, Lion Ron Langlois

Word from our President:
It is with a heavy heart that our members assembled to say goodbye to Lion Diane Terava this month. Though she was a fairly new member, Lion Diane was always there to lend a helping hand. Her laughter and great enthusiasm will be greatly missed.
Work has started on our Jug Curling Tournament. Letters should be out by mid February. Hopefully the response will be positive.
I’d like on behalf of all our members, welcome back Lion Jacques Lacroix amongst our fold. A long time member, Lion Jacques took a few years off Lionism. We are glad he decided to return and are hoping his wife might do the same in the near future.
With March peering its head, now is the time to think about elections fast approaching. Perhaps this is the year for you to take on a new role: president, secretary, treasurer, etc… Read up on the responsibilities of each, talk to the member who held that post and see if it is something you might like to take on. Let’s not forget also that the post for Region and Zone Chairs will be up for elections at the end of March. This is a great opportunity to meet new clubs and see what goes on at Cabinet. Being on Cabinet for the last three years has shown me the ins and outs of Lionism but I am more than willing to pass on the role to someone else, get some new blood in there.
On closing, I would like to offer Lion Stan, family and friends our sincerest condolences. Remember Lion Stan that we are here should you need anything. Anytime you are ready to come back, we will welcome you with open arms.
Have a great Valentine Day everyone and don’t forget your sweetheart!
Lion Ron Langlois, President

For the Romantic…
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of every day's
Most quiet need; by sun and
candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints,--I love thee with the breath.
Smiles, tears, of all my life!--and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.
Elizabeth Barrett Browning
All love, at first, like generous wine,
Ferments and frets until 'tis fine,
But, when 'tis settled on the lee,
And from th' impurer matter free,
Becomes the richer still the older,
And Proves the pleasanter the colder
Samuel Butler
She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies,
And all that's best of dark and bright,
Meet in the aspect and her eyes;
Thus mellow'd to that tender light
Which heaven and gaudy day denies.
Lord Byron
If ever two were one, then surely we.
If ever man were lov'd by
wife, then thee;
If ever wife was happy in a man,
Compare with me ye women you can
I
prize thy love more than whole
mines og Gold.
Or all the riches that the East doth hold.
My love is such that rivers cannot quench,
Nor ought but love from thee, give recompense.
Thy love is such I can no way repay,
The heavens
reward thee manifold repay,
Then while we live, in love let's so persevere
That when we live no more, we may live ever.
Ann Bradstreet
Deare, when I from thee am gone,
Gone are all my joyes at once;
I loved thee, and thee alone,
In those love I joyed once,
And although your sights I leave,
Sight wherein my joyes do lie,
Till that death do sense bereave,
Never shall affection die.

Word from our President:
Half the year is already gone. Congratulations to all the hard work our members have been putting into the hall and in helping our fellow citizens. We have a great team of workers at the Azilda Lions and we need to recognize their dedication and encourage the camaraderie between other groups as well.
In working at the Chelmsford Breakfast with Santa, sharing the Christmas party with Valley East and other groups, lending a hand with the Valley East Senior’s supper, these show some of the sharing the load among our fellow Lions while helping our communities. We should never lose that. We are all working for the same cause, we are all SERVING. Sharing the load with other groups makes it all the more interesting and seem less like work. Let’s spread the word and help each other out.
I would like to congratulate Lion Martha Castonguay on her transfer from the Rainbow to our club. We hope you will enjoy being part of our group. As our Governor iterated, it is not the number of members we have but the number of quality members that count. Let us keep that in mind as we try to recruit in the new year.
A lot of new projects are coming up in the new year. Some may not be Lion related but showing our colors, showing we are in the community to help, will only show our fellow citizens what great work we do. Projects such as “Keeping them Warm” –a program that dresses kids in need, “Racing Against Drugs” – a three day event to teach our kids there are ways to have fun and do things without the use of drugs; projects such as these set up by our Councilor Mme Dutrisac who recruits some of our members to help her out are great ways to show we are present within the community.
Let us not forget that our Annual Jug and Golf Tournaments are peering on the horizon too. Many hours are entailed in making these successful and we will need the help of all our Lions as well as volunteers within the community. If you know anyone who can help, please call our secretary.
I want to take a moment and wish each and everyone of you a great holiday season, a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year too. Stay safe and we will see you all refreshed for the coming year.
President Lion Ron Langlois

The
Meaning of Christmas
Just a week before
Christmas I had a visitor. This is how it happened. I just finished the
household chores for the night and was preparing to go to bed when I heard a
noise in the front of the house. I opened the door to the front room, and to my
surprise, Santa himself stepped out from behind the Christmas tree. He placed
his finger over his mouth so I would not cry out. "What are you doing?" I
started to ask him.
The words choked in my throat, as I saw he had tears in his eyes. His usual jolly manner was gone. Gone was the eager boisterous soul we all know. He then answered me with a simple statement, TEACH THE CHILDREN! I was puzzled: What did he mean? He anticipated my question, and with one quick movement brought forth a miniature toy bag from behind the tree.
As I stood there bewildered, Santa said, Teach the Children! Teach them the old meaning of Christmas. The meaning that a now-a-day Christmas has forgotten!
Santa then reached in his bag
and pulled out a FIR TREE and placed it on the mantle. Teach the Children that
the pure green color of the stately fir tree remains green all year round,
depicting the everlasting hope of mankind. All the needles point heavenward,
making it a symbol of man's thoughts turning
toward heaven.
He again reached into his bag and pulled out a brilliant STAR. Teach the Children that the star was the heavenly sign of promises long ago. God promised a Savior for the world, and the star was the sign of fulfillment of that promise.
He then reached into the bag and pulled out a CANDLE. Teach the Children that the candle symbolizes that Christ is the light of the world, and when we see this great light we are reminded of He who displaces the darkness.
Once again he reached into his bag and then removed a WREATH and placed it on the tree. Teach the Children that the wreath symbolizes the eternal nature of love. Real love never ceases. Love is one continuous round of affection.
He then pulled out from his bag an ornament of HIMSELF. Teach the Children that Santa Claus symbolizes the generosity and good will we feel during the month of December.
He reached in again and pulled out a HOLLY LEAF. Teach the Children the holly plant represents immortality. It represents the crown of thorns worn by our Savior. The red holly berries represent blood shed by Him.
Next he pulled out a GIFT from the bag and said, "Teach the Children that God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son. Thanks be to God for His unspeakable gift. Teach the Children that the wise men bowed before the holy babe and presented Him with gold, frankincense, and myrrh. We should give gifts in the same spirit as the wise men."
Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a CANDY CANE and hung it on the tree. Teach the Children that the candy cane represents the shepherd's crook. The crook on the shepherd's staff helps bring back strayed sheep from the flock. The candy cane is the symbol that we are our brother's keeper.
He reached in again and pulled out an ANGEL. Teach the Children that it was the angels that heralded in the glorious news of the Savior's birth. The angels sang 'Glory to God in the highest, on earth, peace and good will.'
Suddenly I heard a soft twinkling sound, and from his bag he pulled out a BELL. Teach the Children that as the lost sheep are found by the sound of a bell, it should bring people to the fold. The bell symbolizes guidance and return.
Santa looked at the tree and was pleased. He looked back at me and I saw the twinkle was back in his eyes. He said, "Remember, teach the Children the true meaning of Christmas, and not to put me in the center, for I am but a humble servant of the One who is, and I bow down and worship Him, our Lord, our God."
Gifts of time and love are surely the basic ingredients
of a truly merry Christmas."

Word from our President:
With the economy the way it is, we anticipate more demands than even last year for help. Now is the time to show what we can do as Lions and help our fellow citizen. Money is not always the issue. Sometimes an attentive ear, a few moments of your time is all someone might need. Be conscious of the needs of those around you and be proud of being Lions. Remember: WE SERVE!

If you belong to another club and have an activity happening, send it along. I will gladly add it so others may know about it.
I want to take this moment and wish everyone a great year ahead. Let’s try to recruit again this year so we may be able to do even more to help out our community.
If anyone is interested in taking the Smart Serve course, please advise me asap. We are trying to put one together for mid October.

Word from our President:
Welcome back everyone! I hope you all had a restful summer (what there was of it!) and are ready to tackle the upcoming year with all its challenges and trials. As always, we will keep going with our Jug and Golf Tournaments as well as our bi monthly spaghetti suppers.
Our Governor Lion Maurice Turgeon strongly encourages the groups to support the House of Kin this year. That is his project for this term. With his theme “Move to Grow”, he is encouraging us to keep looking and asking people to join the organization. I too encourage you to invite friends and neighbors to come to a meeting and see what we are all about. The more we are, the easier the work will be for us all.
I am looking forward to being your RC again this year too. Please don’t hesitate to call me if you should need my help.
